Jesse Faden arrived at the Federal Bureau of Control seeking answers about her brother Dylan and the events that took place in Ordinary, a small town in Maine, seventeen years ago.

On that day, the residents of Ordinary encountered an Altered World Event connected to a slide projector — an Object of Power that opened doorways to other dimensions. Jesse and Dylan were the only children who survived.

The Bureau took Dylan into custody. Jesse escaped, guided by a mysterious entity she would come to call Polaris — a presence that had been with her ever since, whispering direction through the noise.

For years, Jesse searched for the FBC, haunted by visions and drawn by a resonance she couldn't explain. When she finally walked through the front doors of the Oldest House, she found the previous Director dead and the Service Weapon waiting for her.

The Board chose her. She became the new Director. And the Hiss — a hostile resonance from another dimension — had already begun to spread.
